During the widening of highway No. 4 (70+385 – 71+600) we conducted preliminary excavations at site No. 4/14 near Cegléd (Pest county, Hungary) in 2005 and 2006, covering an area of 44.672 square meters. We excavated 1 644 features, including 95 Bronze age features, 776 Sarmatian features, 36 Avar features, 217 Árpád age features, 14 Modern features and 506 features lacking any indication to their age. We excavated a Sarmatian settlement, that covered approximately 10.000 square meters. Stratigraphy and find material revealed multiple phases of Sarmatian settlement in the region between the 2nd and 5th century A.D. Grave No. 1280 was located near the NE border of the settlement, on a flood-free bank of a dried-up rivulet. Fieldwalks revealed, that the actual area of the site greatly exceeded the excavation area to the west, to the south and to the NW. Thus grave No. 1280 could have been the southernmost or southwesternmost burial of the cemetery bordering the settlement from the northeast. |
