Basic data
Period: Avar Age,Arpad Age,Late Roman Age
Site version description: The archaeological site encompasses a multi-period Sarmatian settlement (or several settlements) and one (perhaps two) cemeteries, covering an area of 45–50.000 m2. The edge of an Árpád era settlement was observed along the eastern boundary of the site. The two main features of these Roman period sites (the settlement and the cemetery) were both closely related to a large ditch, which periodically appeared and disappeared in the excavated tract of the highway. The ditch may be interpreted as a spillstream of Maros/Mureș. 47 graves of a Sarmatian cemetery were discovered in the eastern section of the highway tract, and a late Sarmatian settlement was unearthed in the western section. Each were enclosed by a ditch. 11 skeletons were recorded in the features of the settlement. Three skeletons display definitely Sarmatian ethnic traits. Four were buried according to Sarmatian funerary customs. The final four were documented as pertaining to an uncertain period. Seven Avar period burials were discovered in the southern section of the tract, located within the Sarmatian settlement. Six were simple pit graves, oriented NW–SE, dateable to the early and middle Avar period. A single catacomb-niche grave was located approximately 20 m east of the previous burials. This burial was oriented E–W. Further threee E–W oriented catacomb-niche grave of an Avar cemetery were identified amidst Sarmatian settlement features on the area of the northern on-ramp of the highway.
